Food Security: Steps to Solutions
Did you know more than 1 in 3 Montgomery County residents are food insecure? This means they do not have enough to eat and often do not know where their next meal will come from. Shockingly, the number in Montgomery County includes 27,000 children. These figures come from a recent report from the Capital Area Food Bank, which also details greater and growing needs at all local food banks.
My approach to big problems—like fighting food insecurity and hunger—is to keep in mind the larger policies we need to put into place while taking practical steps to address the most pressing needs faced by our neighbors.
Are you interested in learning what is being done in our community to improve food security? Join me at Rainbow Community Development Center in White Oak on Saturday, November 9th from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.
Here are some steps you can take at the November 9th event:
• Help give out food during Rainbow’s twice-monthly food distribution.
• See how Rainbow rescues food from local stores, which prevents emissions from landfills or incinerators and addresses food security.
• Bring a Giant or Target gift card to donate. They will be given to recipients who can then make their own purchases. You can also donate to Rainbow CDC directly here.
• Hear me talk about how these important steps fit into ongoing efforts to strengthen our entire food system.
