What Next? Keep Caring. Keep Showing Up.

Updated: Nov 17

Of course, like so many of you, I am devastated by the results of the presidential election. While we dread the likely chaos at the federal level, I have confidence in our state and local governments.  My fellow state legislators and I will continue to do all we can to ensure Maryland models to the nation how to govern both wisely and compassionately.

Most importantly, we must keep caring and showing up for one another.

Huge thanks to the more than 120 volunteers who went with me—beginning in July—to canvass in Pennsylvania and here in Maryland.  We knocked on thousands of doors to promote Democrats up and down the ballot.  Many others made phone calls, wrote postcards, and donated financially.

What an honor to live and represent this fantastic community where so many people have stepped up—and will continue—to fight for our democracy.

Election Bright Spots:

+ I’m glad Marylanders answered a resounding “YES” to enshrining reproductive freedom in our state constitution.

+ Congratulations also to the newly-elected Democrats who will be representing Maryland in the U.S. Congress!

•    Angela Alsobrooks in the U.S. Senate:  I proudly endorsed her and many of you joined me to knock doors for her. I could not be more pleased to have such a dedicated and hard-working woman in the Senate, fighting for our families and our future.  Her historic win makes her the first African-American U.S. Senator elected in Maryland.

•    Sara Elfreth and Johnny Olszewski (and, hopefully, April Delaney!) in the U.S. House: With Elreth’s win, Maryland no longer has an all-male congressional delegation.

•    I also want to give a special shout-out to Jamie Raskin.  What an enduring privilege to be represented by this courageous constitutional scholar and progressive powerhouse!

Food Security:  Steps to Solutions

How are people caring for and showing up to people experiencing food insecurity?  Join me at Rainbow Community Development Center in White Oak on Saturday, November 9th from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.  I’ll talk about how the important steps Rainbow CDC is taking fit into ongoing efforts to strengthen our entire food system.  R.S.V.P. here.

Some steps you can take at this Saturday’s event:

•    Help give out food during Rainbow’s twice-monthly food distribution.

•    See how Rainbow rescues food from local stores.

•    Donate a Giant or Target gift card.  It will be given to recipients to make their own purchases.

•    Donate to Rainbow CDC directly here.
